The Macallan Colour Collection 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ml (ABV varies; see bottle label) is the opening statement of the Colour Collection, the age-statement series The Macallan Distillery of Craigellachie, Speyside unveiled for global travel retail in August 2023, with a rollout across boutiques and key airports from September of that year. The youngest of the five expressions, this single malt Scotch whisky carries the lightest natural colour in the range: a golden oak hue drawn entirely from the cask, with no colouring added at any stage.
That hue is the entire philosophy in miniature. The Colour Collection celebrates two of The Macallan's Six Pillars, natural colour and sherry seasoning, principles that have guided the distillery since 1824. The 12 Year Old matures in American oak casks seasoned with sherry wine from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, harmoniously complemented by a subtle inclusion of European oak. Each cask is crafted and seasoned in Andalusia before travelling to The Macallan Estate at Easter Elchies on Speyside, where it is filled with the distillery's robust, fruity new make spirit.
A dozen years of quiet interaction between spirit and sherry-seasoned oak yield a whisky of bright, approachable character. The nose offers sweet oak and lemon peel, the palate follows with syrup sponge and orchard fruits, and the signature tasting notes of sweet oak, lemon and vanilla run through to the finish. Fresh, vibrant and citrus-led, it is the clearest single expression of the American oak-forward recipe that defines the whole collection.
Graphic designer David Carson created the series' visual identity, and for the 12 Year Old he worked with albariza soil from the Jerez vineyards, applying the chalky white earth to paper as if it were paint, with Easter Elchies House appearing beside the bottle in his artwork. Overseen by Master Whisky Maker Kirsteen Campbell, the Colour Collection marked the return of age statements to The Macallan's travel-retail whiskies, and this inaugural expression is the natural starting point for collectors assembling the full five-bottle spectrum of natural colour.
