2022 Springbank 11 Year Old Local Barley Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ml

The Local Barley series is Springbank at its most Campbeltown: single malt made entirely from barley grown within sight of the town, revived in 2016 as an annual tribute to the celebrated Local Barley bottlings of the 1990s. The 2022 edition, an 11-year-old, is built on Belgravia barley raised at Glencraigs farm just up the road from the distillery.

Springbank remains the only distillery in Scotland to malt 100% of its barley on its own traditional floor maltings, and every step — malting, distilling through its distinctive two-and-a-half-times process, maturing, and bottling — happens on site. Distilled in 2011 and bottled in December 2022 at a natural 55.1% ABV, this release drew on a mixed maturation of sherry, bourbon, and rum casks in roughly a 55/35/10 split.

The farm-specific grain and lightly peated house style meet in the glass as campfire smoke drifting over orchard fruit, with toffee, digestive biscuit, citrus oil, and an unexpected flash of tropical fruit from the rum wood. The cask-strength delivery keeps the texture oily and coastal, finishing on brine, malt, and soft earthy peat.

Local Barley editions sell through on announcement and rarely resurface, making each vintage a genuine event for Campbeltown devotees. Take it neat first, then with a few drops of water to stretch the fruit — and log your impressions, because no two years of this series taste alike.
