The Headliner is the ninth release in Penderyn's Icons of Wales series, a collection of limited editions celebrating the people and moments that shaped the Welsh nation. Each numbered bottling pairs a chapter of Welsh history with a distinctive cask recipe, and No. 9 honors one of the most consequential figures the country ever produced.
That figure is David Lloyd George (1863–1945), the only Welshman to serve as British Prime Minister and a man who dominated newspaper front pages through war, reform and upheaval — hence "The Headliner." Whisky drinkers owe him a particular debt: his Immature Spirits Act of 1915 required whisky to mature for at least three years, a rule that still defines the category today.
The whisky itself is matured in Jamaican rum and ruby port casks, an unusual pairing that layers tropical sweetness over rich red fruit. Bottled at 46% ABV in a 700ml presentation, it shows Penderyn's aromatic house spirit at its most flamboyant, with the rum bringing molasses warmth and the port contributing berries and tannic grip.
Expect strawberries and cream, cranberry and light oak on the nose with nutmeg and cinnamon behind. The palate delivers dried fruits, salted caramel, floral honey and a black-pepper spark, finishing sweet then fading dry and fruity. A collectible pour that drinks as well as it displays.
