Nikka Yoichi Single Malt Japanese Whisky 750ml

In 1918, a young chemist named Masataka Taketsuru sailed from Japan to Scotland, enrolled at the University of Glasgow, and talked his way into apprenticeships at working malt distilleries. He returned home with two notebooks crammed with production detail and a Scottish bride, Rita — and after years of frustration working for others, he founded Nikka in 1934 and built his first distillery at Yoichi on Hokkaido.

Taketsuru chose Yoichi precisely because it felt like the country he had left: a cold, damp fishing town pressed between mountains and the Sea of Japan, with peat bogs nearby and crisp maritime air. That coastal setting is widely credited with the faint salinity that threads through every Yoichi malt, a briny seasoning no inland warehouse can replicate.

To this day, Yoichi heats its pot stills over open coal fires — a demanding, nearly extinct technique that lightly scorches the wash and imparts a toasty, muscular depth. Combined with peated malt, it yields Japan's boldest classic single malt style. This no-age-statement flagship, bottled at 45% ABV, blends Yoichi stock across a range of maturities.

Smoke arrives first on the nose, wrapped around baked orchard fruit, sea spray, and dark chocolate. The palate balances peat embers with malt sweetness, salted caramel, and peppery oak, driving toward a long, warming, ash-and-fruit finish. Take it neat, then add a few drops of water to watch the fruit push through the smoke.
