The 1973 Longmorn Duncan Taylor 34 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a single cask trophy from an era of Speyside distilling that no longer exists. Distilled in 1973 at Longmorn, near Elgin, and matured for 34 years before bottling by Duncan Taylor of Huntly, it captures the rich, waxy, fruit-laden spirit that made Longmorn a blender's secret weapon for a century — at full maturity.
Duncan Taylor, founded in Glasgow in 1938, spent decades quietly accumulating one of the largest privately held inventories of rare Scotch casks in the world. Its reputation rests on releases exactly like this: ancient single casks from great distilleries, bottled at 46.9% ABV without colouring or chill filtration, presented as the wood delivered them.
Casks of this age yield only a few hundred bottles, and early-1970s Longmorn drew on direct-fired stills and older barley varieties that modern production has since replaced. Each surviving bottle is a finite document of that vanished regime. This one has been stored upright; as with any bottling now decades old, modest label and closure wear consistent with age should be anticipated, and the photographs show the actual bottle.
In the glass, expect honeyed oak, orchard fruit and dried apricot, beeswax, and soft baking spice, with the long, gently drying finish that defines well-kept old Speyside. It is both a benchmark old-Longmorn dram and a museum piece for the independent-bottling collector.
