Glenmorangie The Original 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky, bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV), is the boldest move the house has made in decades: in 2024 it retired its beloved ten-year-old flagship and raised the bar, re-launching The Original with a minimum of twelve years in cask. Same DNA, two more years of patience — and a noticeably silkier, sweeter, more complex result.
Why tamper with an icon? Director of Whisky Creation Dr Bill Lumsden found that spirit from Glenmorangie's famously tall copper stills — the loftiest in Scotland, giving an exceptionally light and pure new-make — gained fresh dimensions of creaminess and depth at twelve years. The upgrade was vindicated quickly, taking gold at the World Whiskies Awards in its debut year.
Maturation follows the house classic template: American white oak ex-bourbon casks, first- and second-fill, which build vanilla and coconut sweetness onto the delicate citrus-and-peach spirit. The extra two years deepen the texture without ever tipping the balance toward heavy oak — this is still the definitive everyday Highland malt, just more of it.
The glass shows mandarin, honeysuckle, and vanilla fudge on the nose, then a creamy palate of peach, coconut, toffee, and gentle baking spice before a long, tangerine-tinged finish. If you knew and loved the old ten, this is the same friend returned from two more years of finishing school.
