Dalmore Port Wood Reserve Single Malt Scotch Whisky trades the house's usual sherry emphasis for the warmth of the Douro Valley. Bottled at a purposeful 46.5% ABV in 750ml, this Highland single malt from The Dalmore in Alness, Ross-shire, begins in American white oak ex-bourbon casks; half the spirit then remains in bourbon wood while the other half matures in aged Tawny Port pipes from the celebrated W&J Graham's of Portugal, before the two are married back together. The reunited whisky is then given time to harmonise before bottling, knitting the two strands into a single seamless whole.
The elevated bottling strength was chosen deliberately to carry the port influence, making this one of the boldest pours in The Dalmore's Principal Collection. It is a modern showcase for the cask curation philosophy the distillery has honed since its founding in 1839 by Alexander Matheson, and the 12-point royal stag of Clan Mackenzie on the bottle anchors it firmly within the house tradition of rich, wine-influenced Highland whisky. It also remains one of the very few core Dalmore expressions bottled above 46 percent.
Graham's port pipes lend the whisky a vivid red-fruit dimension. The nose brims with sweet red berries, Seville oranges, plummy fruit, and sticky toffee pudding. On the palate, nectarines and creamy caramel meet roasted chestnuts and Java coffee, with the extra strength giving the flavors real drive and persistence. The finish is generous and warming, rolling through rich plums, sultanas, blood orange, and macerated cherries.
Port Wood Reserve is a natural choice for drinkers who enjoy sherried malts but want something with brighter fruit and more muscle. Pour it neat to experience the full 46.5% intensity, or add a few drops of water to bloom the berry notes. It stands up beautifully to chocolate desserts, salted caramel, washed-rind cheeses, and cool evenings that call for a whisky with warmth to spare. For fans of port-finished malts from any region, it ranks among the most complete examples of the style.
