Auchentoshan 12 Year Old comes from the distillery on the outskirts of Glasgow that does what no other in Scotland does: triple-distils every single drop. Founded in 1823, this Lowland house sends its spirit through three copper pot stills — wash, intermediate and spirit — collecting new make at around 81% ABV, far higher than the roughly 70% typical of double distillation. The payoff is a famously delicate, refined single malt.
Twelve years of maturation in bourbon and sherry casks build gentle layers onto that light spirit. American oak contributes vanilla, honey and toasted cereal sweetness, while sherry wood adds nutty depth and dried-fruit warmth, all bottled at 40% ABV.
The nose offers toasted almonds and crème brûlée brushed with citrus zest and a touch of green leaf. On the palate it is smooth and sweet, with vanilla, honey and toffee giving way to light oak spice, before a medium finish of nutty sweetness and gentle ginger. Wine Enthusiast rated it 91 points, and Jim Murray's Whisky Bible scored it 91.5.
This is a superb gateway single malt for bourbon drinkers and an easy recommendation for anyone who finds Highland or Island whiskies too assertive. Enjoy it neat, with a few drops of water to lift the almond notes, or as the base of an elegant highball. It represents the classic Lowland style — clean, elegant, approachable — executed by the region's most distinctive distillery.
