BHAKTA Spirits is the Vermont-based venture of Raj Peter Bhakta, the founder of WhistlePig, who turned his attention after that success to rare aged spirits, assembling one of the world's deepest collections of vintage Armagnac at his Château BHAKTA cellars in France. The house specializes in single-vintage bottlings, each drawn from one year's distillation and elevated by casks from that extraordinary library.

BHAKTA 2012 is the brand's first Indian single malt. Distilled in 2012 in copper pot stills in the tropical climate of Goa from 100% six-row North Indian malted barley grown in Rajasthan, the whisky matured roughly a decade in conditions where evaporation runs high and maturation races far ahead of anything possible in Scotland or Vermont. The result is a malt of surprising depth for its years, shaped by heat, humidity, and monsoon air.

After its tropical aging, the malt received a 131-day finish in casks that previously held 1982-vintage Armagnac, a signature move that threads dark French brandy character through the sun-baked Indian spirit. It is bottled at a formidable 113.8 proof (56.9% ABV) while keeping its essential malty elegance intact.

The pour opens with a delicate malty sweetness that builds toward roasted chestnut, toasted oak, and a whisper of smoke, with dried fruit and rancio from the Armagnac wood shading the finish. Gold-medal showings at the New York World Wine & Spirits Competition and USA Spirits Ratings underline its pedigree. This is a rare bridge between India's fast-maturing malts and France's oldest cellars, and a compelling pour for collectors of world whisky.
