Macallan The Archival Series Folio 4 Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ml brings music to The Macallan's collectible encyclopedia of advertising history. Distilled at The Macallan Distillery in Craigellachie, Speyside, this no-age-statement single malt Scotch whisky is the fourth limited release in the Archival Series that began in 2015, presented in the book-style tin that defines the set. Like every volume in the series, it is bottled at 43% ABV (86 proof).
Folio 4 features the advertisement headed 'Macallan - A Strathspey of Singular Sprightliness,' built around a strathspey composed by James Scott Skinner (1843-1927), the fiddler celebrated as 'The Strathspey King.' The ad recounts that Skinner was moved to music by the lilting flavour and melting resonances of a tumbler of his favourite malt whisky, The Macallan. Small but groundbreaking, it marked the first time musical notation had appeared on an advertising page of The Times, and quite possibly a first for the advertising of any whisky, anywhere in the world.
In keeping with the series' concept, Folio 4 pairs its whisky with archive storytelling in the book-shaped packaging that stacks neatly beside the other volumes on a collector's shelf. The Archival Series was conceived to revisit and celebrate the press, print and film campaigns of the 1970s, 80s and 90s, mapping the story of The Macallan from a remote farmstead above the River Spey to a whisky enjoyed around the world, and this instalment, affectionately dubbed music for the mouth, captures the Holmes and Salaman campaign at its most playful and inventive.
