Sazerac 18 Year Old 2016 90 Proof marks a significant technical pivot at Buffalo Trace Distillery (DSP-KY-113), introducing a fresh distillate for the first time since the exhaustion of the 1985 vatted stocks. Distilled in the spring of 1998, this spirit underwent 18 years of primary maturation in new charred American white oak. While earlier releases in the series were sourced from heritage distilleries, it is widely understood that from 2016 onward, the whiskey is distilled in-house at Buffalo Trace.
Although the distillery initially intended to move away from vatting after 2015, this 1998 stock was ultimately batched and transferred into stainless steel tanks to preserve its structural integrity across a three-year release window spanning 2016, 2017, and 2018. This tanking process arrested further wood extraction, maintaining a consistent profile defined by a 72.1% evaporation loss prior to vatting, resulting in a dense, silky mouthfeel with concentrated notes of allspice, leather, and citrus zest.
