Orphan Barrel Scarlet Shade is a 90 Proof (45% ABV) straight rye whiskey produced as a limited release from the Orphan Barrel Whiskey Co. This 2023 expressionâthe brand's first-ever ryeâutilizes a high-rye mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley. Distilled in Indiana and aged for 14 years across state lines at the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Kentucky, the liquid benefited from a patient maturation in a traditional seasonal climate.
Such extended aging for a rye results in a refined, full-bodied profile of sweet vanilla buttercream, toasted oak, and banana bread. These primary notes are complemented by baking spices and rye toast on the palate, finishing with sweet orange marmalade and lingering dark chocolate.
