Heaven Hill Grain to Glass Chinquapin Oak Rye Whiskey is a highly allocated, 107 Proof (53.5% ABV) limited-edition straight rye released in October 2025 as part of the inaugural Specialty Barrel Series. This technical expression is aged for seven years and highlights the structural interaction between identity-preserved grain and rare cooperage. While the standard rye series uses traditional white oak, this spirit was fully matured in Chinquapin oak barrels (Quercus muehlenbergii), a species native to the limestone soils of Central North America, prized for its dense grain and high vanillin concentration.
Produced at the Heaven Hill Distillery, this release features a unique mash bill of 63% rye, 24% corn, and 13% malted barley. The corn component utilizes the 2018 vintage of Beck’s 6225, grown by Peterson Farms specifically for the Grain to Glass program. Matured in Rickhouse W5 (Floors 3 and 5) at Cox’s Creek, the Chinquapin oak’s porosity facilitated a chemical profile defined by deep herbal earthiness and dark spice. The technical presentation includes a 700ml bottle of non-chill filtered liquid, offering a rich mouthfeel with notes of sandalwood, smoky black tea, and caraway, balanced by a lingering finish of charred oak and vanilla custard.
