WhistlePig The Boss Hog VIII - The One That Made It Around the World is the rare sequel "B-side" to the Boss Hog circumnavigation arc. WhistlePig combined eleven barrels of the 2021 Boss Hog VIII (LapuLapu's Pacific) with the four barrels they had originally shipped to Andalusia, Spain to finish - barrels meant to follow the same route as the lone surviving ship of Magellan's 1519-1522 expedition. The Spain barrels were lost at sea in spring 2022 before eventually being recovered and shipped back to Vermont. The result is a Canadian-sourced 17-Year Straight Rye Whiskey, double-finished in 7-year-old and 10-year-old small-batch Philippine Rum casks (per the standard LapuLapu's Pacific protocol) and then rested in Andalusian Spain, bottled at cask strength of 103.5 proof, with a 100% rye mash bill.

The Boss Hog is WhistlePig's annual experimental release - the distillery's outlet for its rarest, most extreme single-barrel rye each year. Every release follows what WhistlePig calls its promises (later expanded to its "X Commandments"): single barrel, bottled at proof, distinctly different from anything else in the lineup, fearlessly first, and irreverently inventive. Toppers are hand-cast in Danforth pewter, and each year's release has its own theme - sometimes tribute to a pig in the WhistlePig family, sometimes a historical figure, sometimes a region or tradition the team traveled to study.

The release lands as a 501-year nod to the 1522 return of the Victoria - the single remaining ship from Magellan's fleet, which made landfall on the Andalusian coast after completing the world's first recorded circumnavigation. The bottle carries a set of limited "battle of resistance" pewter toppers inspired by the recovery of the lost barrels at sea. Together with Boss Hog VII (Magellan's Atlantic) and the standard Boss Hog VIII (LapuLapu's Pacific), this release completes the program's three-bottle circumnavigation set.

On the nose, it shows the maple syrup, molasses, pepper, and clove of the LapuLapu core, layered with a faint marine salinity from the Andalusian leg. The palate brings burnt pineapple, lemon peel, mint tea, and rolling caramel, and the finish carries a long close of spiced apple, allspice, and lingering green tea.
