Romanee-Saint-Vivant takes its name from the medieval abbey of Saint-Vivant, whose monks tended these slopes centuries before the appellation system existed. The grand cru sits just below Romanee-Conti itself on the gentle lower slope of Vosne-Romanee, where deeper soils yield a wine of lace and lift rather than sheer mass, often described as the most perfumed voice in the DRC range. Its wines are often the first of the domaine's grands crus to open, yet among the longest to fade.

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti is the largest holder of the cru, farming the former Marey-Monge parcels it came to own outright in 1988. By 2001 the vineyard was moving fully into the biodynamic-leaning viticulture that defines the modern domaine: severe yields, whole-cluster inclinations in the cellar, and elevage in new French oak that the wine absorbs without losing transparency.

The 2001 vintage produced classically proportioned red Burgundy, cooler in profile than the opulent 1999, with bright acidity and fine, persistent structure. Twenty-five years on, this Romanee-Saint-Vivant sits at full maturity: rose petal and ripe red cherry now entwined with sandalwood, sous-bois, orange zest, and the gentle spice that marks the cru. It is a vintage that has quietly outperformed early expectations, as classic years so often do.

Treat it as a mature trophy rather than a fragile relic. Rest the bottle upright for a day or two, decant briefly off sediment, and serve around 16 degrees Celsius in generous stemware. It has the balance to hold, yet there is little reason to defer an experience this complete. Simple roasted birds or the wine alone will let it speak.
