With a bottle of this age and standing, the purchase is the provenance. A 1969 Romanee-Saint-Vivant from Domaine de la Romanee-Conti is acquired on the strength of its documented storage history, its fill level, the condition of capsule and label, and a clear chain of custody, and those records deserve as much attention as the wine itself. Every detail of how this bottle has lived since 1969 is part of what you are collecting.
The vintage belongs to a storied chapter in the vineyard's history. DRC began farming Romanee-Saint-Vivant in 1966 under a lease from the Marey-Monge family, whose name remained on the labels into the early 1970s, and the domaine would not purchase the parcel outright until 1988. A 1969 therefore captures the very first years of DRC's stewardship of this grand cru, in a Burgundy vintage remembered for its concentration and staying power. Aubert de Villaine and Andre Noblet were guiding the domaine's cellars in this period, and their patient, low-intervention approach shaped the wines of the era.
Service demands patience. Sediment is a certainty after more than five decades, so stand the bottle upright for several days before opening. Use gentle, unhurried cork extraction, decant slowly only to separate the deposit, and pour without delay, because a wine of this age evolves quickly once open and should be drunk upon opening rather than left to wait.
In the glass, expect the ethereal register of very old Vosne-Romanee: faded rose, dried cherry, incense, forest floor, and spiced tea on a silken, weightless frame. Gather the right table before the cork comes out. Bottles like this reward ceremony, attentive glasses, and the understanding that the experience is singular and unrepeatable.
