Revana Family Vineyard began in 1997, when Houston cardiologist Dr. Madaiah Revana purchased land just north of St. Helena after a medical conference brought him to Napa Valley. Raised on a farm in southern India, he set out to build a small estate devoted to a single wine: Cabernet Sauvignon of uncompromising quality. He planted the property in 1998 with the guidance of vineyard manager Jim Barbour, and the debut 2001 release announced a serious new name on the Napa scene.
The 2005 season in Napa Valley ran long and cool, with a late harvest that let the estate's Cabernet ripen slowly on gravelly bench soils near St. Helena. Cool weather stretched hang time deep into autumn, building flavor at measured sugar levels, and the resulting wines have proven among the most cellar-worthy of their decade. This vintage was crafted during the tenure of founding winemaker Heidi Barrett, whose early releases established Revana among Napa's most sought-after small properties.
Two decades of bottle age have carried this Cabernet into full maturity. Primary cassis has evolved toward dried black fruit, cedar, tobacco leaf, and sweet earth, with tannins now fine and fully resolved. The oak that once framed the wine has been absorbed completely into its texture, and the finish stretches long and quiet. Expect natural sediment: stand the bottle upright for a day and decant gently before serving.
This is a wine for slow evenings and classic pairings such as roasted lamb, dry-aged beef, or hard mountain cheeses. Serve at about 62 degrees Fahrenheit in generous glasses, and pour it for guests who appreciate what twenty years of patience can accomplish in Napa Cabernet. About an hour of air lets it show its complete range.
