The OVID Napa Valley red is the flagship of the estate's organically farmed vineyard on Pritchard Hill, and 2013 was, in the winery's words, an epic year of remarkable alignment: an early, dry budbreak in the second drought year, a long and seamless growing season, and an unhurried harvest stretching from September 10 to October 4 that let every varietal block come in exactly ripe. OVID picks each parcel at its own pace, a luxury the calm September made easy.
The result is a Cabernet Sauvignon-led estate blend of great intensity and profound flavor. Sweet, firm tannins interleave with blackberry and dark cherry fruit, espresso, spice and licorice, at 14.8% alcohol off the vineyard's Hambright volcanic soils, after 21 months of barrel aging. It is inky and deep yet balanced, the drought year's concentration checked by the long, even season.
Critics were emphatic. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate found a cascade of gorgeous fruit and predicted the wine would age beautifully for 25 to 30 years. Antonio Galloni called it the most complete OVID yet and wouldn't dream of touching a bottle before age ten, while Decanter praised its fresh, refined structure under winemaker Austin Peterson.
This is the 1.5-liter magnum, the format serious cellars favor for exactly this kind of wine: slower evolution in large glass preserves freshness across the decades-long arc the critics describe. Now past its tenth birthday, it is entering the window Galloni prescribed, and a magnum pours twelve to sixteen glasses for a standing rib roast or a milestone anniversary. Store it on its side, cool and dark, then decant an hour or two and serve it with a true occasion.
