The Estate Red is the flagship of Gemstone Vineyard, a Bordeaux-inspired assemblage drawn from the property's sixteen acres of micro-blocks in Yountville. Where the estate's varietal Cabernet emphasizes structure, this cuvée is composed for completeness, layering four grapes into a single seamless voice. Consulting winemakers of national reputation have guided the program over the years, yet the constant is the site itself, a gravelly Yountville parcel farmed with obsessive attention.
In 2013 the blend came together as 66 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 26 percent Merlot, 6 percent Cabernet Franc, and 2 percent Petit Verdot. The result is luscious and seductive, with hints of blueberries, mocha, cherry cola, and creamy vanilla carried on opulent, sweet, silky tannins that stretch into a long, plush finish. Merlot in this proportion is uncommon among top Napa estate blends, lending a welcoming mid-palate that pure Cabernet rarely shows in youth.
The vintage behind it was extraordinary. A dry winter and a warm, even summer let Napa growers pick each block at leisure, producing 2013 reds of rare concentration and architecture that critics quickly ranked with the greatest young Cabernet-based wines the valley has made.
Offered here in the 1.5-liter magnum, a format whose gentler oxygen exchange famously stretches a wine's plateau of maturity. Built to age fifteen years or more from the vintage, it is entering a generous middle age now. Decant generously and serve with a substantial roast. A magnum also makes a statement at the table, pouring for a dinner party while delivering wine that has evolved more slowly than any standard bottle from the same cellar.
