This original wooden case holds one bottle each of the 2007, 2008, and 2009 Cardinale Estate Red — three consecutive chapters of the Jackson Family's Napa Valley flagship. Under winemaker Christopher Carpenter, Cardinale is assembled each year as a single statement wine, drawing Cabernet Sauvignon from a roster of celebrated mountain and benchland sites including Mt. Veeder, Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain, and Diamond Mountain, with Merlot lending flesh to the blend.
Each vintage in the case speaks with its own accent. The 2007 comes from a warm, dry, universally praised year that produced dense, seamless Cabernets built for decades. The 2008 was born of frost and drought that slashed yields, concentrating what remained into a darker, more brooding wine. The 2009 closes the trio with a long, temperate season whose polish and aromatic lift make it the most graceful of the three.
Tasted side by side, the set becomes a study of how one house style bends to nature: blackberry, cassis, and mountain sage run through all three, while grip, density, and perfume shift year to year. Expect graphite and crushed rock from the volcanic slopes, espresso and dark chocolate from French oak, and tannins now entering a silky maturity.
Consecutive-vintage vertical sets in the original wood are a collector's format, ideal for a milestone dinner where the three wines can be opened together and argued over course by course. Store the case on its side in cool, stable conditions and decant each bottle an hour ahead.
