The 2007 Ode to Picasso carries one of Napa Valley's most endearing inside jokes: the name honors not the Spanish painter but a beloved cat who once presided over the family's Spring Mountain property. Beneath the whimsy sits a serious Napa Valley red, a blend built around Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah in the plush, expressive style that made this tiny producer a quiet legend among devotees of handcrafted mountain wine.
Les Behrens and Bob Hitchcock crushed their first vintage in 1993 above a storefront in Arcata, then moved the operation to the top of Spring Mountain in 1997. When Bob and Lily Hitchcock retired in 2005, Les Behrens and Lisa Drinkward carried on as Behrens Family Winery while keeping the Behrens & Hitchcock name alive as a legacy designation, which places this 2007 squarely within that transitional, family-run era.
The 2007 growing season ranks among Napa's most admired of its decade, a calm, dry year that delivered small berries, thick skins and deep natural concentration. In the cellar the fruit received the house treatment of tiny lots, gentle handling and unhurried barrel aging, blended by palate rather than formula. The finished wine marries Cabernet's firm frame and dark-currant depth with Syrah's savory flesh, spice and midnight color.
Now approaching two decades from harvest, the wine has traded youthful muscle for tertiary charm, showing dried blackberry, cocoa, leather and sweet earth as the tannins relax. Treat it as the mature bottle it is: stand it upright beforehand, decant gently off any sediment and serve at cellar temperature. Plan to enjoy it now through roughly 2030 rather than betting on further long-term improvement in the cellar.
