The 2016 Hundred Acre Wraith Cabernet Sauvignon is Jayson Woodbridge's cellar-within-a-cellar, a selection of extraordinary barrels drawn from the lots destined for his single-vineyard wines. Jeb Dunnuck awarded this vintage a perfect 100 points, calling out its multi-dimensional character and three-decade future, which places Wraith among the most exalted bottlings in the entire Hundred Acre hierarchy. The name suits a wine assembled from barrels that were meant to disappear into other bottlings and instead became the summit of the range.
Rather than expressing one site, Wraith weaves together the estate's three Napa vineyards: the clay-rooted Kayli Morgan north of St. Helena, the volcanic Ark terraces below Howell Mountain, and the gravelly Few and Far Between outside Calistoga. Barrels are set aside only when they show something singular, so the blend captures each vineyard's personality while building a complexity none achieves alone.
Where the single-vineyard wines rest thirty months in new French oak, Wraith goes further, spending a full forty months in barrel before release. That marathon elevage in the celebrated 2016 vintage produced tannins of impossible fineness and a texture Dunnuck described as magical, full-bodied, and endlessly layered, with the structure to evolve past mid-century. Few producers anywhere leave Cabernet in wood this long without drying it out, which makes the wine's vibrancy all the more remarkable.
Pouring nearly black, the 2016 unfurls creme de cassis, boysenberry, tar, incense, tilled earth, and vanilla bean over a chassis of glossy, enveloping tannin. It drinks shockingly well young for such a monumental wine, yet patience through the 2030s and 2040s will be repaid many times over at the table.
