Trailside Vineyard spreads across 85 acres at the northeastern edge of Rutherford, where the Silverado Trail meets Conn Creek. After buying its Cabernet fruit through the early 1980s, the Heitz family purchased the site outright in 1984, and it grew into a mosaic of sixteen blocks, seven clones and eight distinct soil types, all feeding a single celebrated vineyard-designated wine. Few Napa vineyards can claim such internal diversity within one fence line.
Trailside also launched the estate's organic conviction, earning CCOF certification in 1987, remarkably early for Napa Valley, and setting the standard the rest of the Heitz vineyards would follow. Its first solo vintage, 1989, joined Martha's Vineyard and Bella Oaks as the third single-vineyard Cabernet in the Heitz range when it finally reached drinkers in 1993 after long cellaring. That runway between harvest and release remains a Heitz signature to this day.
Drought defined the 2015 growing season, cutting yields sharply and concentrating everything that remained on the vine. Rutherford's deep, gravelly benchland kept the mature vines in balance through the dry summer, and the resulting Cabernet pairs saturated cassis and black cherry with the cocoa-dust tannin, the famous Rutherford dust, that distinguishes the appellation's finest wines. The 2015 is compact, muscular and unmistakably built for the long haul.
Raised in the unhurried Heitz style and held back at the winery before release, this 2015 now drinks with real authority: full, layered and firmly structured, with a savory mineral undertow running beneath the fruit. It will reward the table through the late 2030s alongside dry-aged ribeye, saddle of lamb or short ribs braised slowly in red wine. Cellared well, it has years of unhurried evolution still ahead of it.
