Distilled and bottled in Kentucky by Michter's, it was approved by Master Distiller Dan McKee and Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson.
To make it, Michter's takes its US-1 Kentucky Straight Rye at barrel strength and ages it for an additional period in a second custom barrel assembled from 24-month air-dried wood that is toasted but not charred. The expression followed years of research into barrel finishes for rye, and the second barrel's gentle toasting — rather than a fresh char — caramelizes the wood sugars to coax out deeper, rounder flavor. As a limited release bottled at cask strength, each barrel is filled at its own particular proof, so no two bottles are exactly alike.
The toasting gives the rye a distinctive profile: a nose of toffee, honey, black walnut, and a hint of campfire opening into dark chocolate, salted caramel, cherry, and mint, with pronounced spice balanced by rounded oak on the finish.
