The 2022 Michter's US-1 Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash Whiskey is bottled at 86 proof (43% ABV) and produced by Michter's Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky. A limited, small-batch release, the 2022 edition was the second-ever bottling of Michter's Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash — the first since the 2019 inaugural — approved by Master Distiller Dan McKee and Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson.
The whiskey begins as Michter's US-1 Sour Mash, a distinctive recipe whose grain selection bridges the profiles of bourbon and rye without legally qualifying as either. In 2019, that base whiskey was named "Whisky of the Year" by The Whisky Exchange — the first time any American whiskey had ever earned the honor. For this release, fully matured Sour Mash is pulled from its first fire-charred, new American oak barrels and re-barreled into custom casks built from 18-month air-dried wood that is toasted but not charred. The technique extends Michter's Toasted Barrel Finish program, which launched in Fall 2014 as the first toasted barrel whiskey ever released in America, and McKee and Wilson personally determine the level of toast to best showcase the whiskey.
The second maturation layers in extra sweetness and a rounded, silky character, with vanilla, caramel, and toasted oak defining the profile. Michter's continues the legacy of a company that traces its roots to 1753 and the original Shenk's distillery, and it stands today among the most admired names in American whiskey. As only the second Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash Michter's has ever released, the 2022 is a scarce, innovation-forward bottling and a rewarding pour for collectors of limited Michter's releases. Toasting the second barrel rather than charring it caramelizes the wood sugars differently, coaxing a softer, dessert-like sweetness from the mature Sour Mash. With each Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash appearing only every few years, the 2022 is a genuinely hard-to-find chapter in one of Michter's most inventive programs.
