The 2017 Michter's 25 Year Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is bottled at 116.2 proof (58.1% ABV) and is distilled and bottled in Kentucky by Michter's. The pinnacle of Michter's age-stated lineup, this hyper-aged bourbon was matured for more than a quarter century in new, fire-charred American white oak. The 2017 release — Michter's first 25 Year Bourbon in nine years, since the 2008 inaugural — was decided by Master Distiller Pamela Heilmann after she tasted it with Master of Maturation Andrea Wilson, and went on sale November 1, 2017.
"I take the Michter's 'Dr. No' position as the gatekeeper for releasing whiskey very seriously," Heilmann said. "When I tasted this 25 Year Bourbon, I knew immediately it was perfectly aged." Heilmann had become the first woman since Prohibition to serve as Master Distiller at a Kentucky Distillers' Association member distillery when she was promoted in 2016. Michter's considers its 25 Year Bourbon "as fine as any bourbon ever released throughout Michter's storied history," drawn from the distillery's finest and oldest barrels and bottled only as stocks permit, continuing the legacy of a company that traces its roots to 1753 and the original Shenk's distillery. Bourbon matured a full quarter century is extraordinarily rare — only a handful of barrels survive that long with the balance and richness Michter's demands, while most are lost to evaporation or overwhelmed by oak. The official profile is a symphony of molasses, holiday spice, chocolate, smoke-roasted nuts, dried fruit, melted butter, and vanilla, carried on a complex, full mouthfeel.
