The 2016 Michter's Celebration Sour Mash Whiskey is the second release of Michter's rarest and most prestigious expression, bottled at 116.8 proof (58.4% ABV). It is a blend of Kentucky Straight Bourbon and Kentucky Straight Rye taken from the most extraordinary first-use barrels in Michter's stocks, with whiskey aged from over a decade to over 30 years old. The 2016 edition was the swan song of Michter's Master Distiller Willie "Dr. No" Pratt, hand-selected before Pamela Heilmann succeeded him as the first woman since Prohibition to serve as Master Distiller at a Kentucky Distillers' Association member distillery.
Released only about once every three years, Celebration is the rarest and most prestigious whiskey Michter's makes — a barrel-strength blend of the distillery's oldest and most extraordinary Kentucky Straight Bourbon and Kentucky Straight Rye barrels. When the inaugural edition arrived in 2013, it marked the first time an American company had offered a rare blend intended to rival the finest spirits made anywhere in the world, helping to launch the ultra-luxury tier of American whiskey.
Michter's continues the legacy of a company that traces its roots to 1753 and the original Shenk's distillery, and it stands today among the most admired names in American whiskey. Because each Celebration is assembled from only a handful of irreplaceable barrels and released in tiny quantities, it ranks among the most coveted and collectible American whiskeys ever produced. As Willie Pratt's final Celebration and only the second release in the series, the 2016 is a landmark, exceptionally scarce bottling for serious collectors. Because Celebration blends straight bourbon and straight rye, it cannot legally be called either and instead carries the broader Sour Mash Whiskey designation — a fitting name for this marriage of Michter's two flagship grains at extraordinary age.
