Buffalo Trace Experimental Collection French Oak Barrel Head Aged is a Bourbon from Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. This 2015 release was distilled from Buffalo Trace Rye Bourbon Mash Bill #1 (low-rye recipe) and filled in 2005 into a hybrid barrel - American white oak staves with French oak heads, air-dried six months and charred for 55 seconds - then aged for ten years before bottling in May 2015.

The Experimental Collection is Buffalo Trace's long-running program of one-off whiskeys exploring unique mash bills, woods, barrel toasts, and aging conditions, with more than 2,000 experimental barrels aging in the distillery's warehouses. The 2015 French Oak release paired this hybrid barrel against a 100% French oak barrel, isolating head-only French oak contact versus full French-oak influence. Only two barrels were produced.

On the nose, it shows baking spice mingled with apple pie aromas. The palate brings smoky oak and tannin tempered by vanilla, cinnamon, and cloves, and the finish carries a balanced spice-and-fruit close.

The hybrid build let French oak heads contribute tight spice and tannin while American oak staves preserved more familiar bourbon-style vanilla and caramel, producing a middle path between the two oak species. It drinks well neat or over a single large cube.
