The 2018 Yellowstone Limited Edition Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a 101 proof (50.5% ABV) blend of hand-selected Kentucky straight bourbons aged 4 to 12 years — including a portion of Limestone Branch Distillery's own distillate made with heirloom white corn — finished in No. 3 deep-char wine casks and limited to approximately 12,000 bottles, each signed by distiller Steve Beam.
The 2018 release closed out a three-year experiment unlike anything else in the series. Beam used the same 28 wine barrels across three consecutive Limited Editions: new and toasted rather than charred for the 2016 release, lightly charred for 2017, and finally deep-charred to a No. 3 level for 2018 — the third and final act of the trilogy. Each pass changed what the wood gave the whiskey — and, as the official release describes it, the heavy char over bourbon-wet oak produced “a rich palate of burnt sugar, deep caramel and a lingering essence of crème brûlée.”
The fourth annual Limited Edition, it reached the market in October 2018 in a commemorative tube, with Beam's signature on every bottle. The blend itself reflects the distillery in transition: hand-selected, sourced Kentucky straight bourbons married with Limestone Branch's own heirloom white corn distillate, the house spirit Beam had been laying down in Lebanon, Kentucky since reviving the brand.
For collectors of the series, the 2018 bottling is the completion piece — the finale of the only multi-year cask experiment in Yellowstone Limited Edition history, and one of the few releases signed by hand. On its own merits, it is a 101 proof, wine-cask-finished Kentucky straight bourbon with genuine age depth, from a name that has been on American back bars since 1872 — and the only No. 3 deep-char wine cask finish in the Limited Edition series' history. No later vintage has revisited the technique, which makes the trilogy's closing chapter a genuine one-off.
