The Willett 80th Anniversary Straight Bourbon Whiskey commemorates eight decades of one of American whiskey's great family stories: the Willett Distillery of Bardstown, Kentucky, established in 1936 by Thompson Willett, with its first barrel of whiskey rolled into Warehouse A by St. Patrick's Day 1937.
The anniversary it marks is a genuine survival tale. Built on the family's 130-acre farm at one of the highest points in Nelson County, the distillery weathered the industry's collapse — its stills went cold by the early 1980s — before Even Kulsveen, who married Thompson Willett's daughter Martha, purchased the property in 1984 and rebuilt the business as Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, one of the most respected independent bottlers in America. In 2012, distilling returned to the family property under the Willett Distillery name, with Thompson's grandchildren — including fifth-generation Master Distiller Drew Kulsveen — running the operation to this day.
Like most of Willett's commemorative and gift-shop releases, the 80th Anniversary bourbon was documented by the distillery itself rather than the press: its specifications live on the bottle's label, the collector's document of record. What is certain is the occasion — a milestone very few American distilleries have reached under continuous family ownership — and the source: a house whose selections under the Willett name rank among the most trusted in bourbon. Only a handful of American whiskey families can date an unbroken, still-family-owned name to the immediate post-Prohibition era.
