WhistlePig The Béhôlden 21 Year Old Single Malt Whiskey is bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV) and finished and bottled by WhistlePig at its farm in Shoreham, Vermont. Distilled from 100% malted barley at the Glenora Distillery in Glenville, Nova Scotia, it was matured for 21 years in American oak and then finished for four weeks in former WhistlePig 10-year rye barrels before bottling.
Released in spring 2023, the Béhôlden was billed as the first-ever super-aged North American single malt — matured more than twice as long as any other on the continent at the time. Twenty-one years in American oak built a rich base of maple and dried fruit over a bready, nutty character, while the brief finish in WhistlePig's own rye barrels added a distinctive spice-edged signature that ties the single malt back to the farm's rye heritage.
With only 18 barrels produced for the initial run, the Béhôlden sold out almost immediately and remains exceptionally hard to find. Founded in 2007 on a 500-acre former dairy farm in Shoreham, Vermont, WhistlePig helped lead the modern rye whiskey renaissance under founding master distiller Dave Pickerell, the former Maker's Mark master distiller, and has become one of the most celebrated names in American whiskey. As the release that launched WhistlePig's super-aged single malt series and a landmark in North American single malt history, the Béhôlden 21 Year is a rare, collectible bottle prized by enthusiasts of ultra-aged whiskey and a centerpiece for any serious collection. The single malt category has surged in popularity across North America, and the Béhôlden proved that the continent could produce ultra-aged malt to rival the world's best. Its combination of two decades in American oak and a finishing touch from WhistlePig's signature rye casks makes it unlike any single malt produced elsewhere — a distinctly North American take on the style, and a piece of whiskey history for collectors who managed to secure one of its few bottles.
