The Distillery Reserve Series is where Still Austin's blending team gets to think out loud — small experimental runs offered in tiny quantities, most of which never travel beyond the tasting room door. The Vulture rye is one of those escapees: a limited straight rye that pairs an unconventional mash with one of the most arresting labels the distillery has ever commissioned.
That label carries a Texas turkey vulture rendered by BrunkyArt, an unglamorous bird chosen deliberately: scavengers keep an ecosystem honest, and the artwork salutes the resilience and strange beauty of the Texas landscape this whiskey comes from. It is a portrait few producers would dare put on a bottle, which is precisely the point of a reserve series.
Inside is a four-year straight rye built from 57% Brasetto rye, 33% white corn, and 10% wildfire malted barley — a corn-cushioned, malt-heavy structure quite unlike the distillery's single-varietal flagship rye. Bottled at 106 proof (53% ABV), it lands in the sweet spot between bonded strength and barrel proof, carrying real intensity while staying conversational.
The nose leads with aromatic rye spice, warm honey, toasted malt, and a thread of citrus. The palate is rich and rounded: caramel, dark chocolate, and baking spice balanced against corn sweetness, resolving into a long finish of oak, black pepper, and lingering malted-barley toastiness. Reserve releases like this surface rarely and vanish quickly — once this run is gone, the vulture flies on.
