The 2022 Remus Gatsby Reserve is the inaugural edition of the annual crown jewel of the Remus portfolio: a 15 year old straight bourbon bottled at cask strength, arriving at 97.8 proof. Released in October 2022, it celebrates the Jazz Age world of F. Scott Fitzgerald's most famous novel, a fitting tribute given that the real George Remus, Cincinnati's King of the Bootleggers, is often cited as an inspiration for Jay Gatsby himself.
Master Distiller Ian Stirsman and his team at Ross & Squibb Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana built this debut from the distillery's finest 15 year old reserves of high-rye straight bourbon, whiskey laid down in 2007 and left to mature in new charred American oak far longer than nearly anything else in the rickhouses. Presented in an Art Deco inspired decanter, it was produced in ultra-limited quantities as a once-a-year statement piece.
Fifteen Indiana summers give this pour a deep mahogany character. The nose leads with polished oak, dark caramel, and pipe tobacco, while the palate layers toffee, vanilla bean, dried cherry, and baking spice over firm, well-integrated tannin. Because the barrels proofed down naturally over time, the cask strength here drinks with remarkable poise, closing on a long finish of leather, cocoa, and lingering rye warmth.
The inaugural Gatsby Reserve went on to earn double gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, platinum honors at the ASCOT Awards, and a place on the Robb Report's list of the 50 greatest bourbons. As the first chapter of the series, the 2022 edition holds a distinct place in any vertical of modern Indiana whiskey.
