Rare Hare 1953 takes its name from the year Hugh Hefner founded Playboy, and it served as the inaugural release from Rare Hare Spirits, the ultra-premium spirits program of PLBY Group. The program carries the rabbit-head heritage into whiskey by sourcing exceptional aged stock and issuing it in small, numbered runs housed in decanter-grade glass, and this bourbon set the template for everything that followed.

The whiskey is a Kentucky straight bourbon aged 17 years in American oak, then finished for roughly nine to twelve months in XXO Cognac casks hand-selected from the Naud family's five-generation reserve in France. XXO designates Cognac aged at least fourteen years, and that seasoned French wood layers candied fruit and Grande and Fine Champagne grape delicacy over deep, oak-driven bourbon character.

Bottled at 111 proof, it leads with toasted oak, caramel, and dark chocolate, then folds in vanilla, baking spice, and the candied-fruit sweetness of its Cognac finish. Seventeen years of Kentucky heat give it density and grip; the elevated strength keeps the fruit and spice vivid all the way through a long, warming close that rewards a few drops of water.

Production was capped at 1,953 bottles for the American market, a number matching the founding year it honors. This example is supplied as the bottle alone, without the original outer packaging. As the release that launched the series, it remains the touchstone bottling for anyone collecting the full Rare Hare line.
