Old Forester 117 Series 1910 Extra Extra Old Batch 001 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky arrives at an elegant 93 proof (46.5% ABV) in a 375ml bottle, a highly specialized double-barreled expression within Old Forester's limited 117 Series from Louisville, Kentucky. Released in December 2022 by Brown-Forman's founding brand - America's first bottled bourbon, sealed and signed by George Garvin Brown in 1870 - 1910 Extra Extra Old marks a deliberate extension of the distillery's historic double-barreling legacy. This expression pays tribute to the famous October 1910 fire on Louisville's Whiskey Row, which shut down the bottling line and forced the distillery to store mature whiskey in new, heavily charred secondary barrels, inadvertently creating the industry's first documented double-oaked bourbon.
The name describes a radical prolongation of secondary maturation rather than a standard finish. For this inaugural batch, the distillery team took fully matured bourbon and left it to age inside a heavily charred secondary container for a massive 24 months, vastly exceeding the secondary aging timeframe of the standard Whiskey Row iteration. This extreme contact with fresh wood deeply intensifies the interaction between the spirit and the charcoal layer, and Master Taster Melissa Rift describes the outcome as an incredibly decadent whiskey boasting an unmatched depth of oak, dark sugars, and luxurious confectionary complexity born on Main Street at DSP-KY-354.
In the glass, the official tasting notes open with rich aromas of roasted coffee, rich maple syrup, dark chocolate, and caramel over undertones of toasted coconut, dark cherry fruit, and a smoky char foundation. A deeply balanced and velvety texture coats the palate with dominant flavors of rich mocha coffee and hints of sweet brandy while a layer of dark brown sugar and cloves adds incredible texture, and the finish leads with smooth, creamy chocolate coffee notes that fade gently across a long, warm oak finish. 1910 Extra Extra Old joins a 117 Series lineup - named for the brand's original address at 117 W. Main St. and launched in 2021 - that includes Warehouse H, Whiskey Row Fire, and High Angels' Share.
For collectors, Batch 001 carries weight beyond the liquid. The 117 Series is Old Forester's experimental canvas, bottled in the distinctive 375ml format and released in limited quantities through the Old Forester Distillery and select Kentucky retailers, which keeps every batch scarce beyond the Bluegrass State. As the inaugural chapter of Old Forester's most extreme double-barreled wood experiment, 1910 Extra Extra Old Batch 001 stands as a historic milestone in Old Forester's modern history and a natural cornerstone for any serious bourbon collection.
