Maker's Mark Wood Finishing Series 'London No. 3' Limited Release Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky is an exclusive, small-batch expression that bridges the heritage of Loretto, Kentucky, with the bold spirit of the UK's capital. Built upon the foundation of Maker's Mark Cask Strength, this innovative city-centric bottling is part of the distillery's renowned wood stave-finishing program. Crafted in collaboration with acclaimed London tastemakers, including chef Douglas McMaster and master bartender Ryan Chetiyawardana, the release was designed to encapsulate the sensory complexity of London's vibrant culinary and cocktail culture.
At the heart of this limited edition is the iconic Maker's Mark wheated mash bill, which swaps aggressive rye grains for soft red winter wheat to yield a naturally sweeter, smoother spirit. After completing its primary maturation of roughly six to eight years in standard charred American oak, the fully matured bourbon underwent a secondary finishing process. For this global City Series chapter, ten custom-selected oak staves were inserted into the barrels, introducing a bespoke wood profile that coaxes out deeper, richer dimensions without losing the classic distillery DNA.
The Wood Finishing Series celebrates the artistry of wood science, a concept pioneered at Star Hill Farm by Bill Samuels, Sr. and further evolved through modern stave experimentation. Bottled at a robust 110.8 proof (55.4% ABV), the London No. 3 Edition elevates the classic wheated profile into a deeply layered, high-strength masterpiece. It stands as a distinct liquid development triumph within the global series, entirely separate from standard packaging-only collectibles, making it a highly sought-after prize for international connoisseurs and serious bourbon collectors alike.
Pouring a rich copper-gold, this 700ml release uncoils with an aromatic symphony of buttercream icing, toasted vanilla, and orange peel, underpinned by salted caramel and tobacco leaf. On the palate, a creamy, velvety texture delivers punchy baking spices, bright orchard fruits, and a hint of toasted marshmallow sweetness. The finish is remarkably elegant and long-lasting, leaving a parting impression of lingering vanilla sweetness balanced by a vibrant, zesty citrus brightness and a comforting, peppery warmth.
