Garrison Brothers Sonora Straight Bourbon Whiskey is the newest member of the distillery's family of Texas originals, announced in 2025 and first reaching shelves that October. Where its siblings lean on honey or a second round of new oak, Sonora charts its own course as the house's first bourbon finished in rye whiskey barrels, bringing a peppery counterpoint to Garrison Brothers' famously sweet wheated style.

Sonora spends four years maturing in new white American oak before moving into rye whiskey barrels for three more, emerging as a seven-year-old bourbon. That is a serious age statement for whiskey raised in the brutal Texas climate, where scorching summers multiply the barrel's influence far faster than milder regions ever could.

The grain bill follows the house recipe of Texas-grown corn, soft red winter wheat, and barley. That wheated foundation keeps the core round and gentle, while the rye barrel finish stitches baking spice and herbal snap through every sip. Bottled at 108 proof, it carries plenty of muscle without tipping into harsh heat.

Expect aromas of sweet corn, seasoned oak, and rye spices mingling with vanilla and butterscotch, followed by a palate that balances candied sweetness against black pepper and cinnamon. Sonora is a compelling pour for wheated bourbon devotees curious what rye influence can add, and for rye drinkers meeting Texas whiskey for the first time.
