Among devotees of the 1974 A.H. Hirsch Reserve, the closure is the calling card. Across the releases of this single legendary stock, bottles were dressed with wax dips and foils in a handful of colors — blue and gold among the wax seals, with each dressing marking a different moment in the bottling history. The blue wax presentation is one of the scarcer faces of the 16 Year Old, prized by those who chart the brand's editions seal by seal.
Whatever the color on the neck, the whiskey beneath shares one origin. It was distilled in spring 1974 at the Michter's Distillery — operating in that period as Pennco — near Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania, a commission from former Schenley executive Adolph Hirsch. The barrels rested undisturbed for sixteen years, an extraordinary span for the time, before bottling commenced in the early 1990s. Reserves were transferred to steel tanks to freeze the profile in place, and once the distillery was torn down, the well ran permanently dry.
Built on a sour mash of 75% corn, 13% rye, and 12% malted barley and run through pot-still equipment, this bourbon delivers antique oak, caramelized sugar, black cherry, and pipe tobacco aromas. The mouthfeel is dense and rounded, carrying maple, dark chocolate, roasted nuts, and cask spice through an exceptionally long, composed finish at 91.6 proof.
This 750ml bottle wears its original blue wax seal, a survivor from a finite and dwindling population. Wax edges, label paper, and fill height on a whiskey bottled three decades ago will always show honest signs of age.
