Among the great wyrms of the bestiary, the black dragon is the acid-breathing tyrant of the swamps, and in late 2025 it got its own whiskey. The 2025 Dragon's Milk X Dungeons & Dragons Origin Black Dragon Edition arrived as the second installment of the partnership, wrapped in a blacked-out bottle textured like dragon scale and trimmed in gold and crimson. Only 3,696 bottles were produced worldwide, each presented in themed gift packaging.
Beneath the theatrics runs serious whiskey-making. The base spirit follows the Origin blueprint, a malty 70/25/5 grain bill distilled on copper pot stills in Holland, Michigan, and matures for years in new charred oak before the transfer that defines the release: an extended stay in casks that previously held the distillery's own mead. Honey-wine residue in the wood folds a second layer of sweetness into the bourbon, and the finished spirit is set at 100 proof.
Where its 2024 predecessor read honeyed and floral, the Black Dragon Edition veers tropical. Mango, candied orange rind, and dried apricot lead the nose, with a suggestion of pina colada underneath. The palate brings butterscotch, warm brown sugar, and leather in a thick, coating texture, and the finish holds a lingering wine-like sweetness against light spice and toasted oak.
Numbered production, distinctive sculpted glass, and a villain worthy of the label make this a release aimed squarely at the overlap between whiskey devotees and dice-rollers. For those following the crossover series bottle by bottle, the Black Dragon marks its darkest, and most tropical, turn so far.
