Fifty years after the first tabletop party rolled initiative, Dungeons & Dragons celebrated its golden anniversary with an unlikely partner: a Michigan pot-still bourbon. The 2024 Dragon's Milk X Dungeons & Dragons Origin Mead Cask Finish Bourbon opened the collaboration, pairing the game's fiftieth-birthday branding with one of the scarcest finishing techniques in American whiskey. Recognition came quickly, with the debut earning a place on Breaking Bourbon's roundup of the best finished whiskeys of 2024.
Mead casks are the heart of the bottle. New Holland Spirits produces its own honey wine, and the emptied barrels, their staves still saturated with floral honey compounds, receive mature Origin bourbon distilled from the house 70/25/5 corn, malted barley, and rye recipe on a Prohibition-era copper pot still. Because so few producers make mead at all, let alone finish whiskey in its casks, the technique remains genuinely rare, and it suits the fantasy theme: mead is the drink of every tavern in every campaign. The result is bottled at an even 100 proof.
The pour is honeyed and orchard-bright: orange blossom, clover honey, and vanilla on the nose; bananas foster, soft caramel, and worn leather across a weighty palate; then a warm, wine-tinged finish carrying baking spice and a curl of hearth smoke.
As the opening chapter of the crossover and a fiftieth-anniversary keepsake in its own right, the 2024 edition occupies a distinct place in the Dragon's Milk story. Its themed packaging and short production run made it an immediate favorite among whiskey drinkers and lifelong players alike.
