2024 Garrison Brothers Cowboy Straight Bourbon Whiskey marks the 10th anniversary of the distillery's most coveted annual release. Cowboy is the uncut, unfiltered, cask-strength summit of the Texas lineup, and the 2024 edition arrived at a formidable 140.2 proof when it debuted at the Hye ranch on September 21, 2024, with the first 1,000 of its 10,000 bottles reserved for fans at the release event.
Master Distiller Donnis Todd builds each Cowboy vintage by walking the barrel barns and pulling the finest casks on the property, the so-called honey barrels he sets aside years in advance. For this anniversary edition, those barrels rested at least eight years, an eternity by Texas standards, where scorching summers drive the whiskey deep into the char and extract wood sugar at a ferocious pace.
Nothing is done to tame the result. No dilution, no chill filtration, just barrel-proof bourbon exactly as it emerged from the oak. The angel's share claims a heavy toll over eight Hill Country years, and what survives is dense, dark, and syrupy, wearing its triple-digit strength behind a wall of concentrated sweetness rather than raw burn.
The pour is deep mahogany, with a nose of dark caramel, roasted pecan, molasses, and charred oak. On the palate, fudge, cinnamon, black cherry, and tobacco ride an oily, mouth-coating texture toward a finish that smolders for minutes with vanilla, leather, and barrel char. A few drops of water open it further. Presented in a black-and-gold anniversary box, it is a milestone bottle for serious collectors of American whiskey.
