Every autumn, Woodford Reserve's Master's Collection turns the distillery's historic grounds into a proving ground, issuing a limited-edition whiskey that honors the pioneering spirit of the craftsmen who shaped Kentucky bourbon in Versailles during the 1800s. Each entry in the series changes a single element of the whiskey-making craft to see where it leads. The fall 2023 edition, Sonoma Triple Finish, looks westward for its muse, uniting Kentucky's native spirit with the wine country of Sonoma County, California.
Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall, drawing on Brown-Forman's long ties to West Coast winemaking, finished fully matured Woodford Reserve bourbon in three distinct barrel types: casks that previously held Sonoma County Pinot Noir, barrels that aged brandy, and former bourbon barrels that had been used to mature red wine. The three finished streams were then blended into a single harmonious whiskey and presented at Woodford's classic 90.4 proof, arriving in October 2023 in a 700ml bottle.
The triple finishing reshapes the familiar character of the 72/18/10 corn, rye, and malted barley distillate into something rich, fruity, and layered. Vanilla and baking spice from new charred oak intertwine with red berry, plum, and gently vinous tones contributed by the wine casks, while the brandy wood lends a soft orchard-fruit sweetness. It drinks as a spice-and-fruit-forward interpretation of the house style, with a rounded, lingering finish that rewards an unhurried pour.
Wine-cask finishing has appeared only rarely across the Master's Collection's long run, which makes Sonoma Triple Finish a distinctive chapter in the series and a natural companion to the wood-driven experiments that came before and after it.
