The 2020 Yellowstone Limited Edition Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a 101 proof (50.5% ABV), 7-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon finished in French Armagnac casks — a run of roughly 5,000 cases released in September 2020, and the first Limited Edition presented in the brand's redesigned custom bottle.
Master Distiller Stephen Beam chose Armagnac — the rustic grape brandy of southwest France — for the year's finish. “Armagnac is a rustic, full-bodied spirit that contributes dark fruit notes, complementing the vanilla notes in the bourbon,” Beam explained. The French oak casks came from the Armagnac region of southern France, and the finishing was patient by design: per the distillery, the filled Armagnac casks rested untouched for three months, then were tasted every two weeks until Beam and the team judged the marriage complete at about five months. Bottled at the series' signature 101 proof, it kept the strength collectors expect while letting the brandy casks do the talking.
The distillery describes a soft leather aroma with hints of honeydew melon, vanilla on the palate with burnt orange and dried plum, and a toasted coconut finish with lingering oak. Whisky Advocate rated the release 89 points. It arrived during National Bourbon Heritage Month in the first year of the series' embossed custom bottle by designer David Cole, with the vintage year displayed prominently on the front — the packaging template every Limited Edition since has followed.
Within the series, 2020 stands out for restraint: a single-age, 7-year Kentucky straight bourbon rather than a multi-age blend, letting one whiskey and one cask type speak clearly. For collectors, it is both the first bottle of the modern Limited Edition era and one of the smaller runs of the series' middle years — an Armagnac-kissed pour from a bourbon name that dates to 1872 and once ranked as Kentucky's best-selling bourbon.
