The 2020 Woodford Reserve Distillery Series Double Double Oaked Straight Bourbon Whiskey is the 90.4 proof (45.2% ABV), 375ml vintage that vanished fastest: bottled at the end of 2020 and released at the Versailles, Kentucky distillery at 10 a.m. on January 27, 2021, the distillery's allocation sold out by around 4 p.m. the same day.
Per Woodford Reserve's release, Double Double Oaked is “the result of finishing fully mature Woodford Reserve Double Oaked for an additional year in a second, heavily toasted, lightly charred, new oak barrel. The extra year in the barrel creates a bourbon that is distinctly spicier than its original counterpart, known for its sweeter taste and finish.” The 2021 winter release ran with a four-bottle-per-customer limit, with limited quantities also reaching select Kentucky retailers — and, this being the series' convention, bottles carry the 2020 bottling year on the label even though release came the following January.
The official tasting notes read like a winter dessert course: a roasted-coffee-bean color; a nose of rich maple syrup, dark butterscotch, brittle caramel, bittersweet chocolate, burnt marshmallow, and sweet hickory smoke; a palate of dried cherry and cranberry in blackberry jam brightened with ripe apple, plus chai tea and warming clove; and a warm, drying finish with lingering clove.
The release crowned Master Distiller Chris Morris's annual Distillery Series tradition — Woodford Reserve's most-anticipated distillery exclusive, built on the brand's 72% corn, 18% rye, 10% malted barley mash bill and matured at the National Historic Landmark site where whiskey-making dates to 1812. For collectors, the 2020 vintage carries a specific badge of honor: it is the same-day-sellout year, released under pandemic protocols to a line of fans who had waited all year for a half-bottle of the darkest Woodford there is. For those who missed that line, the vintage's reputation only grew — the following year, the brand would answer demand with a national sweepstakes.
