George Remus Repeal Reserve Series I is where the acclaimed annual series began: the 2017 debut medley, bottled at 94 proof to commemorate the December 5th anniversary of Prohibition's repeal. Each yearly Repeal Reserve is a one-time marriage of vintage-dated Indiana bourbons with its recipe published on the label, and this first chapter set the template every later series would follow.
Blended at the historic Lawrenceburg, Indiana distillery then operating as MGP (today Ross & Squibb), the 2017 medley combines three components: 50% bourbon distilled in 2005 from a 21% rye mash bill, 35% bourbon distilled in 2006 from the same 21% rye recipe, and 15% bourbon distilled in 2006 from a spicier 36% rye mash bill. Every barrel matured more than 11 years in new charred American oak before blending.
The result balances age and vibrancy. Maple syrup and toasted vanilla lead the nose, giving way to deep caramel, toffee, and seasoned oak on the palate. The 36% rye component threads cinnamon and peppery spice through the sweetness, and the finish runs long with rye snap and dry, wood-driven complexity that speaks to those extra years in the barrel.
As the origin point of the whole Repeal Reserve line, Series I remains the hardest bottle to track down in the vertical and the essential starting square for anyone assembling the complete run. It also stands on its own merits: an elegantly proofed, fully mature expression of Indiana high-rye bourbon from vintages that are now long gone.
