The Yamato Takeda Shingen Edition honors one of Japan's most storied warlords: Takeda Shingen, the feared "Tiger of Kai," whose cavalry dominated the Sengoku era from the very province — modern Yamanashi — where this whisky's stocks originate. The tribute runs deeper than a name on the label, pairing warlord iconography with armor-dark styling on the line's distinctive sword-hilt bottle.
Like its siblings in the Yamato range, this edition comes from Aiko Importers' small-batch program built on Yamanashi Prefecture whisky, with the source distillery kept confidential; maturation details therefore come from brand materials rather than a named producer.
What sets this edition apart is its emphasis on mizunara cask maturation. Mizunara oak must typically grow for well over a century before it can be coopered, and its loose grain makes barrels notoriously prone to leaking — reasons the wood remains scarce even in Japan. In return, it gives whisky an unmistakable stamp of sandalwood, incense, and exotic spice. Bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof), the Takeda Shingen Edition wears that influence proudly while staying composed and drinkable.
The bouquet blends honeyed vanilla with sandalwood, soft florals, and whispers of incense. Across the palate it is smooth and layered: ripe orchard fruit, toasted almond, a suggestion of coconut, and the gentlest thread of smoke, resolving into a long finish of sweet spice and polished wood. A natural pick for samurai-history enthusiasts and mizunara devotees alike, it makes a commanding gift and an even better pour on a slow evening.
