Tullamore D.E.W. 12 Year Old Special Reserve is the age-stated expression that shows what patience does for a triple-blend Irish whiskey. Every component in the bottle has spent at least twelve years in cask, with some parcels resting up to fifteen, and the recipe leans deliberately on the richer side of the blending room, carrying a high proportion of pot still and malt whiskey against a smaller measure of grain.
Triple distillation keeps the spirit clean, while long maturation supplies the weight. The component whiskeys are drawn from a combination of ex-bourbon barrels and Oloroso sherry butts, then married so that the sweet vanilla of American oak and the dried-fruit depth of Spanish oak arrive together rather than in sequence. Bottling at 40 percent preserves a creamy texture without muting the older stock.
The nose offers warm toffee, ripening banana and toasted coconut. On the palate, malt and milk chocolate move through gentle baking spice, Brazil nut and spiced stewed apple, with cinnamon persisting into a long, rounded finish. It is a noticeably more robust pour than younger blended Irish whiskeys while keeping the smooth delivery the category is loved for.
