Macallan The Archival Series Folio 5 Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ml is bottled at 43% ABV (86 proof), a no-age-statement single malt from The Macallan Distillery in Craigellachie, Speyside. The fifth volume in the limited Archival Series begun in 2015, it arrives in the book-style tin that lets the Folios stand together like an encyclopedia of the brand's advertising past, and it extended its reach when The Macallan brought it to its boutiques at London Heathrow, Dubai and Taiwan Taoyuan airports in early 2020.
Folio 5 commemorates the advert telling the tale of the 'Luggy Bonnet,' captioned 'Keep this knot firmly tied.' The sketched scene recalls acquaintances at the end of a day's sport on Speyside, where one sportsman laments a so-called disaster: missing the offer of a dram of The Macallan from the Laird because his hat was covering his ears. It is classic Holmes-and-Salaman wit, a small story carrying a large truth about how prized a pour of The Macallan had become.
The whisky itself honours the campaign in flavour. The Macallan describes a rich nose of dates and fresh figs with vanilla toffee, gentle ginger and polished oak throughout, while the palate mingles sweet raisin and dates with warming ginger and wood spice into vanilla creme brulee, closing on a medium-sweet finish of ginger and figs. The distillery's whisky maker suggested it as the perfect dram to enjoy neat after a fresh day out in the Speyside hills, and it comes presented with the series' signature archive storytelling inside the book-shaped tin.
