Immerse yourself in a brilliant intersection of avant-garde visual art and fine Speyside craftsmanship with The Macallan 'Gold' Masters of Photography Ernie Button Limited Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Originally launched in 2012 as part of the innovative 1824 Series, Macallan teamed up with visionary Texas-based photographer Ernie Button for this highly collectible capsule release. Button is world-renowned for his macro photography capturing the dried, mesmerizing residue left behind in the bottom of a whisky glass—revealing line patterns and abstract textures that mimic celestial landscapes. Long since discontinued, this particular presentation remains an essential trophy for modern collectors seeking a true marriage of design and single malt history.
The spirit enclosed within follows the meticulous sherried blueprint that cemented the distillery's global icon status. Serving as the bedrock entry point for the 1824 range, Macallan Gold was selected by the master whisky maker according to natural color and flavor profile rather than a traditional age statement. The liquid is aged exclusively in a combination of hand-chosen first-fill and refill American and European oak casks seasoned with rich Oloroso sherry from Jerez, Spain. This carefully tailored wood marriage draws out a lighter, brighter, and more delicate expression of the classic Speyside character while preserving an incredibly soft and approachable texture.
Housed in a standard 700ml bottle, this limited edition is delivered at a smooth 80 proof (40% ABV). The unique presentation elevates it far beyond a standard bar choice: the bottle arrives in a premium, visually striking Ernie Button exhibition gift box equipped with a magnetic closure system, displaying his vivid macro artwork. Furthermore, each capsule package includes a bespoke, branded cork stopper turned from natural, solid oak wood, underscoring Macallan’s absolute obsession with the wood that shapes its whisky. It stands as a vibrant time capsule celebrating artistic ingenuity and the organic beauty of the distillation process.
The olfactory experience opens with an exceptionally bright and inviting nose of sweet vanilla pod, fresh citrus peel, and gentle honey, balanced by soft floral undertones and a hint of clean oak. On the palate, a smooth, beautifully balanced, and creamy mouthfeel reveals rich layers of sweet butterscotch, caramelized orchard apples, and a touch of roasted almond. The finish is of satisfying medium length, trailing softly into lingering notes of sweet toasted wood, a rounded, velvety malty texturing, and a whisper of warm holiday spices.
