1981 Dalmore Amoroso Sherry Finesse Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a rare vintage release from The Dalmore's celebrated sherry-finishing program. Distilled in 1981 at the Highland distillery in Alness, Ross-shire, matured for 26 years, and bottled at 42% ABV in 700ml, this single malt aged in American white oak before receiving an intense finishing period, a finesse, in Amoroso sherry casks from Gonzalez Byass. The release ran to an outturn of just 484 numbered bottles, and it stands well apart from the distillery's core range.
Amoroso, a sweetened style of Oloroso sherry, is one of the more elusive woods in The Dalmore's arsenal, better known from its supporting role in the 15 Year Old's trio of sherry casks. Here it takes the lead across whisky laid down in the early 1980s, an era of Dalmore distillate now prized by collectors, released under the eye of Richard Paterson, the master blender whose vintage work defined the distillery's modern reputation. Each bottle from the release left the distillery with a certificate of authenticity signed by Paterson himself.
A quarter century of maturation and the Amoroso finesse yield a whisky of poise rather than power. The nose shows nutmeg, tangerine, and caramel, a softly spiced take on Dalmore's orange signature. The palate brings almonds, citrus, and autumn fruits wrapped in mellow sherried sweetness, and the finish turns to marzipan and crushed apples, delicate, lingering, and quietly complex in the manner of well-aged Highland malt. It is a profile that favours reflection over spectacle.
As a numbered bottle from a 484-bottle vintage release, with its individual number on the label, the 1981 Amoroso Sherry Finesse speaks to collectors of The Dalmore's rare and vintage output as much as to drinkers. It suits a milestone birthday for anyone born in 1981, a significant anniversary, or the crown of a sherried-whisky collection. If opened, serve it neat, in good company, and with the patience a 26 year old vintage deserves. Vintage Dalmore of this era seldom resurfaces once cellared.
